Social Networking For Career Success

Image

Traditionally networking for career and employment purposes involved attending business or civic events and meeting new people to gain business contacts and advance ones career.  Maybe you would meet people who shared common interests and form a relationship to share industry information or you would forge a relationship with a contact who could help you find a job or further your career in some way.  While this type of face to face networking still maintains a level of importance in the business world, social networking has transformed the way individuals are able to communicate and share information with potential business contacts.

There are two categories of social networking services: internal social networking and external social networking.  An internal social network is an often closed network of individuals from a company, association, society, organization or educational institution.  One example of this is school alumni associations which allow graduates of an educational institution to network with one another and provide career assistance as well as post jobs for its members.  In addition, industry sites such as Sermo.com, a social networking site for licensed physicians, allow doctors to consult with peers specializing in their medical specialty.
